Queuing for the slumberave hotel

HOUR

87

When the creater Charlie Mcfarley came up with the idea for his Slumba-rave party, he wanted to combine the cosyness of a sleep over with the craziness of the rave. This brilliant idea has now become the key attraction of the Shangri-la. After waiting in a queue of eager festival-goers you enter the hotel, where you are asked to remove your wellies and invited to try on some dressing gowns. The whole place is decorated in flowery wallpaper and with giant sized beds to sit or dance on. In true sleep-over style, cartoon like maids spray the party people with lavender spritz and there is even somewhere to get a massage or a pedicure. A completely barmy, unique Glasto experience.

They are heading towards the kidz field as Jay-Jay loves it there. Julie managed to find the stone circle which is something they she hasn’t managed in all her 18 years of Glastonbury experience. In 1998 she managed to get backstage passes and met legend Joe Strummer. When asked why she keeps coming back she said, ’because I just love it!’. Both her and her grandson definitely had the Glastonbury spirit!

Owen, Danny and Ollie: “We went to this stall to buy some cool hats and the guy came out with these prison nighties so we tried them on. Then he offered us them for as a job lot and we ended up buying them cos he was big and scary. They’re not our only fancy dress though – we’ve got a gorilla suit, a monk suit and an army suit that we’ll use at some point too…”

Jim and Mark volunteer for Tools for Self Reliance, a charity which collects, repairs and recycles old hand tools and sends them to Africa. Spades, chisels, hammers and all sort of weird and wonderful things. They’re Glastonbury veterans and come well prepared each year, with their very own Glastonbury sofa. Perfect festival furniture. Well, until it rains.
